Terroir

• The Plovdiv plain, within which the delimited production zone falls, is an alluvial lowland formed by the Maritsa River and its tributaries.
• The zone borders to the north on the massifs of Sredna Gora and to the south on the northern slopes of the Rhodopes, with a predominantly flat-to-rolling relief at elevations of 150 to 300 metres above sea level.
• The climate is transitional-continental, with mild winters and hot summers; the cumulative active temperature sum for the April–October period ranges from 3,700 to 4,000 °C, and the mean daily temperature of the warmest month ranges from 22.8 to 23.9 °C.
• Mean annual precipitation in the zone is 590 mm, and soil types include leached cinnamon forest soils, rendzinas, and alluvial-deluvial soils.
• The flanking ranges of Sredna Gora to the north and the Rhodopes to the south form, together with the plain, a large trough-shaped morphostructure that defines the Plovdiv air basin and gives rise to temperature inversions observed 81% of the time.

• Permitted training systems for the vineyards include Umbrella, Moser, mid-trunk double-arm cordon, and Guyot, with a mixed and short pruning regime and a bud load of up to 54 buds per vine.
• The grape varieties authorised for the production of PDO Plovdiv wines are Vrachanski Misket, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Cherven Misket, and Chardonnay for white wines, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mavrud, Pamid, Rubin, Syrah, and Pinot Noir for red wines and rosé.

• The white wines produced in the delimited zone are characterised by fruity aromas, body, high alcoholic strength, and mineral accents.
• The red wines are deeply coloured, with fruity aromas of black and red forest berries, full and powerful on the palate, and well-balanced.
