Terroir
Natural factors
- The lithological substrates of the hilly terrain are marine sediments (turbidites), partly with a predominantly arenaceous composition and partly with a predominantly calcareous-marly composition.
- Soil texture is coarse loam with an acidic to sub-acidic reaction over arenaceous substrates, while it is fine-textured with a neutral to sub-alkaline reaction over calcareous-marly substrates.
- The vineyards lie between 100 and 2,200 metres above sea level, with a predominant elevation of between 400 and 500 metres, slopes of between 35 and 50%, and a predominantly easterly aspect.
- The mean temperature of the area is approximately 12°C and mean annual rainfall is around 860 mm, with a precipitation peak in December (approximately 130 mm) and a minimum in July (average 25 mm).
- The Huglin bioclimatic index, which describes phenological development and ripening, stands at approximately 1,740°C, with values ranging from 1,390 to 1,980 depending on the vintage.
- The territory of Pornassio lies in the valley of the Arroscia torrent, in a basin fully exposed to the south, at the meeting point between the Alpine and Mediterranean environments. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- An edict of 1303 issued by the Podestà of Pornassio, Marquis of Clavesana, made the cultivation of Ormeasco compulsory throughout the governed territory, as the wine it produced was already highly prized at that time.
- The Ordinamenta of 1303 and the near-contemporary statutes of Pornassio obliged landholders to increase vine plantings and stipulated that the harvest could not begin until after the feast of San Raffaele, on 29 September.
- Sixteenth-century notarial records relating to Pornassio confirm the cultivation of the Dolcetto variety and the concentration of vineyards between 400 and 800 metres above sea level.
Product characteristics
- The wines of the appellation are distinguished by good acidity, bright colour, delicate aromas, and a harmonious, persistent palate.
