Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils: fliš (Eocene sediments) in Brda, Vipavska dolina, and the Istrian hills; limestone and dolomite on the Kras.
- Kras terra rossa (jerina): red soils over limestone, the defining substrate for teran.
- Submediteransko podnebje with occasional summer droughts and frequent bora winds; warm nights reduce acidity (5.5–7 g/l).
- The fliš of Goriška Brda was formed during the Cuisian and early Lutetian; the fliš of the Šavrini Hills belongs to the middle and late Lutetian.
Human factors
- The soils of the Kras are limestone-dolomitic (Cretaceous limestones, 'Komen beds'), with terra rossa characteristic of teran.
- An Eocene fliš bedrock underlies Slovenska Istra, Vipavska dolina, and Goriška Brda; the wines are dry with higher alcohol levels.
Product characteristics
- White wines of the region: extract 16–19 g/l, alcohol 10.5–12.5% vol., acidity 5–8 g/l; warm nights reduce acidity to 5.5–7 g/l.
- Late-ripening varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Refošk, Rebula) require a Huglin Index above 1900; the Primorska climate makes this possible.
Terroir / wine link
- The red Kras soil jerina (terra rossa) is directly associated with Kras teran.
- Fliš soils and submediteransko podnebje with bora winds are the principal terroir characteristics of the entire vinorodna dežela Primorska.
- Warm nights, a consequence of the mild climate, reduce acidity levels in the wine (5.5–7 g/l).
- Despite a Huglin Index above 1900, the Kras plateau restricts variety selection to traditional cultivars owing to specific ecological factors.
