Terroir

• The Primorska wine region is characterised by flysch soils and a sub-Mediterranean climate with occasional summer droughts and relatively frequent episodes of the Bora wind, while the celebrated Kras Teran owes its character to the red karst soil known as jerina, or terra rossa.
• In terms of bedrock geology, the region divides into a limestone-dolomite unit, typical of Kras, and a flysch unit that underlies Slovenska Istra, Vipavska dolina, and Goriška Brda.
• On Kras, Cretaceous limestones and dolomites predominate, and vineyards are found mainly on dark, platy limestones known as the Komen beds, interbedded with dark grey bituminous calcareous shales and cherts.
• The youngest flysch strata occur in Goriška Brda, formed during the Cuisian and early Lutetian, while the flysch of the Šavrini Hills belongs to the middle and upper Lutetian; flysch itself represents a facial form characterised by the rapid alternation of marine clastic sediments.
• The climate is very mild with warm nights, which causes acidity levels to drop, generally ranging from 5.5 to 7 g/l.

• Regional wines made from white grape varieties have an extract of between 16 and 19 g/l, an alcohol content of between 10.5 and 12.5% vol., and acidity of between 5 and 8 g/l.
