• The PGI Rethymno covers an area of 1,496 square kilometres within the Regional Unit of Rethymno.
• The vineyards of the area are semi-mountainous and have a mainly north-facing aspect.
• The climate of the area is the typical Mediterranean climate, with a mean annual temperature of 19°C and mean annual rainfall of 1,200 mm.
• The vineyard soils have a moderate organic matter content, are moderately acidic, and have a moderate calcium carbonate content.

• The systematic production and distribution of dried-grape wines and liqueur wines by the wineries of the area began approximately two decades ago, combining traditional techniques with modern technology.
• Today, production of dried-grape wines and liqueur wines from Rethymno accounts for 10–15% of the area's total wine production.

• The distinctiveness of the liqueur wines and dried-grape wines of Rethymno derives from the combination of the soil and, above all, the climate of their production area.
