- Geology divided into two parts: the Mainzer Becken (Tertiary loose sediments, Löss) in the Upper and Middle Rheingau, and the Rhenish Slate Massif (Lower Devonian) in the Lower Rheingau.
- Rhein and Main terraces — the largest portion by area — carry deep deposits of Löss and loessial Lehm.
- Climate: rain shadow of the Taunus hills, 582 mm annual precipitation, 1,603 sunshine hours, mean annual temperature 10.6 °C.
- The Rhein flows westward for 30 km → predominantly south-facing slopes with intense solar radiation; Mediterranean woody plants in Rhein-side village sites.
Human factors
- First mention of Riesling in 1435 in the records of Count Johann von Katzenelnbogen, documenting a centuries-old winemaking tradition.

- The wines display variety-typical aromatic and flavor characteristics, often with pronounced minerality.
