Natural factors
The tropical climate of Martinique is influenced by the trade winds and very warm ocean currents flowing from the Equator, with a wet season from June to December and a drier season from January to May.
This climate is broadly well suited to sugarcane production, which requires temperatures above 20°C, substantial rainfall during the growth phase, and moderate water stress at maturity.
The sugarcane cultivation zone excludes the mountainous, excessively rainy northern part of the island, following the orographic and rainfall boundaries of the geographical area.
Also excluded are soils exhibiting strong hydromorphism in the first 50 centimetres, found mainly in alluvial valley floors, as well as coastal soils and mangrove soils affected by saline intrusion.
Depending on altitude and exposure to the winds, the delimited area displays a wide diversity of climatic sub-regions associated with numerous pedoclimates that vary in soil water-holding capacity, rainfall patterns, and daily temperature range.
