Terroir

• The zone straddles the provinces of Verona and Brescia, on the boundary between the moraine hills and the hinterland south of Lake Garda.
• The zone benefits particularly from the favourable climatic conditions created by the large mass of the Lake Garda basin, which has encouraged the development of vineyards along its shores.
• Only hillside and foothill vineyards with good exposure are considered suitable, on soils that are predominantly calcareous-clayey in nature and mixed with a substantial proportion of stones.
• The hills of San Martino della Battaglia are a moraine remnant of earlier glaciations, composed of deep-moraine debris ground to an extremely fine powder and mixed with small amounts of clay.
• The vineyards eligible for production extend over a restricted area of just over 70 hectares, with calcareous-clayey soils that are partly hillside and in places almost entirely stony.

• The Provincial Inspectorate of Agriculture of Brescia recommended the Tocai Friulano variety following careful examination of the vineyards in the zone, motivated by a desire to safeguard the good reputation of Lugana and to allow vine cultivation in this area.

• Production of San Martino della Battaglia liquoroso, obtained from overripe Tocai grapes harvested in a late-harvest (vendemmia tardiva) pick, began commercially from 1990 following experiments carried out during the 1980s.

• The dry wine displays moderate acidity and a fresh, dry, rounded flavour with a light aftertaste of almond, and an evolved, intense, characteristic bouquet.
• The colour ranges from citrine yellow tending toward golden with ageing, while the liquoroso style evokes aromas of honey, dried fruit, and candied fruit.
