Terroir

• The territory lies on the slopes of Monte Subasio and encompasses the entire administrative area of the commune of Spello, with vineyard elevations ranging from 180 to 750 metres above sea level.
• The general aspect of the vineyards faces west-southwest, encompassing both typically hilly sloping zones and some flat areas.
• The vine is cultivated on the western flank of the detrital hill and on the marly-sandstone ridges bordering the Valle Umbra, where soils are calcareous, with abundant coarse skeleton, well aerated and low in organic matter.
• In the flat areas below the hill of Spello, soils have formed on clayey-sandy deposits of fluvio-lacustrine origin, with little coarse skeleton, predominantly loam texture and a sub-alkaline reaction.
• In zones close to the main watercourses or at the base of slopes, soils may have received, in the past, inputs of fresh material including calcareous matter through overflood or colluvial deposition.
• The commune stands, together with the nearby Assisi, on the western slopes of the Monte Subasio chain, in the Umbrian-Marchean Apennines, with the town centre at 280 metres above sea level. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
• The sum of active temperatures from budbreak to ripeness ranges between 1,700 and 1,800 degree-days Celsius, with a very warm climate in July and August, temperate in June and continental in character during the remaining months of the year.

• A document dated May 1375, preserved in the State Archive of Foligno, attests to the sale of a parcel under vine cultivation in the territory of Spello.
• The Indicazione Geografica Tipica was recognised by decree of the Ministry of Agricultural Resources on 18 November 1995, subsequently amended on 13 August 1997.
• The grape varieties traditionally cultivated in the geographic area and authorised for production are Grechetto, Trebbiano, Sangiovese and Merlot.

• On the palate, all wines of the appellation show normal acidity, good structure and a complex, harmonious finish.
• The red grape varieties are characterised by a well-balanced concentration of phenolic components responsible for colour and certain tactile gustatory aspects, as well as aromatic compounds of fermentative origin.

• The low content of nutritive elements, in particular nitrogen, and the restrained yields that result from it lend the wines particular vigour and complexity.
