Terroir
Natural factors
- Thick lösz covers the ridges and plateaux; on slopes, a thinner layer of 1–7 m colluvial lösz is present.
- The characteristic soil is an eroded variant of Ramann's barna erdőtalaj; at Geresd, an illuviated clay barna erdőtalaj also occurs.
- The lösz contains 5–30% active lime; Holocene loess loam and sandy-lithoclastic loam soils have developed on it.
- Beyond Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, a continental climatic effect is also present; the water surface of the Duna moderates temperature fluctuation.
Human factors
- The monastery foundation charter of King Béla I from 1061 already names vineyard plots: Csint, Biká, and Fövestelke.
- During the Ottoman occupation, Kadarka spread widely, as did the 'kácis' covering method, regarded as a precursor to closed fermentation.
Product characteristics
- Red wines: well-rounded acid structure, ripe tannins, spicy and complex aromatic profile, full-bodied and richly flavoured.
- In premium wines, tertiary aromatic notes derived from barrel and bottle ageing predominate.
Terroir / wine link
- The lösz soil contains at least 5–7% active lime, which imparts a richer, more complex flavour profile to the wine.
