Terroir

• In the north-western part of the region, as well as downstream along the Tauber below Tauberbischofsheim, reddish Buntsandstein increasingly emerges as the parent material of the vineyard soils.
• Near Lauda, Beckstein, Bad Mergentheim, and further upstream, the lower and middle Muschelkalk forms the principal parent material for the vineyard soils, resulting in vine sites that are mostly shallow and rich in skeletal material.
• Piles of field stones and stone ridges along the edges of the vineyards bear witness to an ancient tradition of viticulture in this region.
• The majority of the vineyard area lies between 220 and 300 metres above sea level.
• The mildly continental climate of the Tauber valley is characterised by low rainfall, hot summers, and at times quite cold winters, with late frosts being not uncommon.

• Well-exposed sites with high sunshine hours, a rugged climate, and mostly low rainfall produce particularly fruity, spritzy wines whose character is further shaped by the vintage climate and the grape variety.
