Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils around Lauda, Beckstein, and Bad Mergentheim consist of lower and middle Muschelkalk – shallow and rich in skeletal material.
- In the northwest and downstream along the Tauber, reddish Buntsandstein comes to the surface.
- Dry-stone cairns and stone ridges along vineyard edges bear witness to an ancient viticultural tradition.
- Mildly continental climate: 600 mm annual rainfall, 1,500–1,550 hours of sunshine, mean annual temperature 9.0–9.5 °C.
- Vine-growing areas lie predominantly between 220 and 300 m above sea level; late frosts are not uncommon.
Product characteristics
- Fruit-forward, lively wines result from sun-favoured sites, a bracing climate, and low rainfall.
- The character of the wines is shaped by the vintage climate and the grape variety.
Terroir / wine link
- Well-exposed sites combined with a bracing climate and low rainfall produce particularly fruit-forward, lively wines.
