Terroir
Natural factors
- The soils are red-brown leached soils of relict origin: jerina, jerovica, or terra rossa, formed by the weathering of Cretaceous and partly Eocene limestone bedrock.
- The climate is an interplay of Mediterranean, continental, and pre-Alpine influences at an elevation of 300 m, with higher daytime and lower night-time temperatures during the ripening period.
- Vineyards must be situated on absolute lega sites within the vinorodni podokoliš Kraška – well-ventilated positions, not in doline depressions.
- The mineral-rich jerina contains Fe and Al oxides as well as amino acids, contributing to higher minerality, sugar-free extract, and ash content in the wine.
Human factors
- Teran is produced exclusively from the Refošk variety grown on terra rossa soils formed by the weathering of Cretaceous and Eocene apnenec. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- The Karst trellis system (kraški latnik) is recommended for viticulture on the Kras; soils must be sufficiently deep to permit deep ripping.
Product characteristics
- The intense ruby colour with violet hues derives from a high anthocyanin content, conditioned by the interplay of altitude and climatic influences.
- Lactic acid – a product of malolactic fermentation – imparts softness, velvety texture, and a ripe fruit character to the wine, with associations of forest fruits.
Terroir / wine link
- Terra rossa (jerina) derived from apnenec gives Teran its minerality, high extract, and overall harmony.

ⓘ «Teran» is a Slovenian protected designation of origin (PDO) in the Kras area of the Primorska wine region. Under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/1353, Croatian wines bearing the «Hrvatska Istra» PDO may also carry the name «Teran» on the label as a wine-grape-variety reference, under defined labelling conditions. Slovenia's action for annulment of that regulation was dismissed by the General Court of the European Union in Case T-626/17 (judgment of 9 September 2020).
