Terroir
Natural factors
- Oceanic climate transitioning to Mediterranean; summer aridity evidenced by strawberry trees and cork oaks; rainfall ~650 mm/year at 450 m elevation.
- Vineyards nestled between 200–500 m a.s.l., sheltered to the north by the Ancares ridge, sierra de Uría, and sierra del Acebo, which act as a barrier against oceanic winds.
- Lower Paleozoic bedrock: metasediments dominated by slates and quartzites, Hercynian granitic outcrops, and weakly metamorphosed rocks.
- Moderately acidic soils with loamy or sandy-loam texture, high permeability and good drainage; low water retention and sparse surface organic matter.
- South- and southwest-facing slopes; the diurnal temperature range promotes the accumulation of anthocyanins and terpenes in the berry.
Human factors
- Traditional gobelet training with wooden stakes and moderate vine densities, adapted to the environment to convey balance and aromatic expression.
- Merenzao, an autochthonous variety, stands out for its deep color, stable acidity, malic-tartaric balance, and high anthocyanin concentration.
Product characteristics
- Whites: yellow-green color, floral and ripe fresh-fruit aromas, broad structure, and a citrus-tinged finish.
- Reds: medium-to-deep ruby-violet color, ripe fruit aromas with a dominance of red fruits, and a lightly tannic finish.
Terroir / wine link
- Summer aridity and the diurnal temperature swing promote the accumulation of phenolic compounds and volatile aromatics that define color, aroma, and flavor.
