Terroir

• By the 1300s, wines from the Valdinievole entered Florence exempt from customs duties, a sign of an already well-established supralocal trade.

• Tertiary-age 'macigno'-type arenaria forms the backbone of the hilly and mountainous terrain of the zone.
• The plain is composed of alluvial soils, while temperate maritime winds are blocked by the Montalbano range.
