Terroir
Natural factors
- Depression of ~150 km² flanked by the escarpments of Tigaiga and Santa Úrsula, formed by the sliding of materials from Las Cañadas del Teide.
- Vineyards situated between 400 and 800 m above sea level on a gently sloping hillside, on the northern face of the Cordillera Dorsal of Tenerife.
- Soils are 70% volcanic, 20% clayey, and 10% volcanic rock; light, permeable, mineral-rich, and slightly acidic in pH.
- Climate moderated by moisture-laden trade winds and by the cold Canary Current of the Atlantic.
Human factors
- The vine arrived in Tenerife in the mid-16th century; the first vines were planted in Los Realejos, within the DO.
- Vines are trained on parrales with multiple braided cordons of up to 15 m, at ~60 cm above the ground; average vine age: 50 years.
Product characteristics
- Distinctive profile: fresh, persistent wines with low acidity, the result of the mild climate and volcanic soils.
- A wide range of styles, from whites and rosés to reds, with a minimum alcohol content of 11% to 11.5%.
Terroir / wine link
- Volcanic soils, a humid trade-wind climate, and braided vine training converge to yield fresh, persistent wines with low acidity.
