Terroir

• The vineyards lie in the north-western part of the Danubian hilly plain, with the Danube river immediately to the north.
• To the west the region abuts the foothills of Stara Planina, and the relief is gently rolling with an average elevation of 150–250 m above sea level.
• In climatic terms the vineyards fall within the climatic zone of the Danubian lowlands, part of the northern Bulgarian temperate-continental climatic region.
• The cumulative heat sum for the period with mean daily temperatures above 10 °C (April–October) is approximately 3,600 °C, and the mean daily temperature of the warmest month is 22.9 °C.
• Mean annual precipitation is approximately 580 mm, and soil types are represented by calcareous chernozems, heavy sandy-clay chernozems, and weakly to moderately leached chernozems, also of heavy sandy-clay texture.

• The authorised grape varieties for the production of PDO Vidin white wines are Aligoté, Rkatsiteli, Muscat Ottonel, Ugni Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay, and for red wines and rosé – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Gamza, and Buket.
• Vine-training systems are Umbrella, Moser, and mid-trunk double-armed cordon, with mixed and short pruning to a load of up to 54 buds per vine.

• The white wines display fruity and floral aromas, with a fresh, fruity, and harmonious palate.
• The red wines offer aromas of red forest fruits and dark plum, while the palate is fresh, full-bodied, soft, and richly fruity, with the fruit character carrying through from the nose to the finish.

• The temperate-continental climate of the region, moderated by the slopes of Stara Planina, provides the cool conditions necessary for the accumulation of aromas in the grapes, and combined with the soil conditions and the human factor, favours the production of wines rich in aromas.
