Terroir

• The Vinos de Madrid appellation is bounded to the north and west by the Sistema Central, to the east by the Alcarria plateau, and to the south by the Tagus river, which define its natural borders.
• Six watercourses, including the Alberche, Guadarrama, and Jarama rivers, delimit the four sub-denominations of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Navalcarnero, El Molar, and Arganda.
• Soils vary by sub-denomination: limestone and gypsiferous marls with a basic pH in Arganda, siliceous soils with an acidic pH in Navalcarnero, and granitic soils with an acidic pH in San Martín de Valdeiglesias.
• Vineyard altitude ranges from 480 to 1,000 metres, with a Mediterranean-continental climate, mean annual rainfall of 658 mm, and temperatures ranging from 40 to −17 degrees Celsius.
• Annual sunshine hours range from 2,300 to 2,800, and the soils of El Molar are formed on diverse geological materials that represent a summary of those found in the other three sub-denominations.

• Sobremadre wines are produced by bottling without racking after the wine has remained in contact with the madres — that is, the crushed and destemmed grape material.
• The vineyards have traditionally been trained as bush vines and farmed without irrigation, with low planting densities and a reduced number of phytosanitary treatments.

• The wines show a high mean actual alcoholic strength — 14% for reds and 12.5% for whites — with medium-low acidity and deep colour in the reds.
• On the nose, ripe to very ripe fruit stands out, sometimes jammy, with notes of pear and apple in whites and of red and black fruit in rosés and reds, while wines from the sierra sub-denominations also display mineral sensations on the palate and aromatic notes of scrubland (garrigue).
