Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils of volcanic origin, brown-soil type: sandy to loamy earth transitions into a clay horizon.
- A markedly kontinentálne podnebie with more stable weather patterns allows even later-ripening vine varieties to reach full maturity.
- The most important sites are near Tibava and Sobrance on the south-facing volcanic slopes of Vihorlat.
- The volcanic origin of the soils underpins a higher minerality that passes from the soil through the grapes into the wine.
Human factors
- The earliest records of vineyards in the region date from the beginning of the 15th century; historically known as zemplínske wines.
- Among the most successful varieties are Tramín červený, Rizling vlašský, Rulandské biele, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigeltrebe, and Frankovka modrá.
Product characteristics
- White wines: fresh, with higher acidity, an optimal sugar-acid balance, and suitable for long-term cellaring.
- Red wines: macerated on the skins, with greater extract and tannin content; ageing brings velvety smoothness and fullness.
Terroir / wine link
- The volcanic origin of the soils enhances minerality, which carries through into the grapes and wine; sunny weather ensures ripeness with an average sugar content of 19 °NM.
