Terroir
Natural factors
- The Kocher and Jagst, tributaries of the Neckar, have cut deeply into the Muschelkalk of the Hohenlohe plain, and the stony, fossil-rich soils are found above all on the steep vineyard slopes along these watercourses.
- The remainder of the Hohenlohe wine country is characterised by the reddish, nutrient-rich marls of the Keuper formation, while skeleton-rich Muschelkalk occurs along the rivers.
- The Neckar forms the backbone of the Württemberg wine-growing region, with its sun-warmed, shallow, skeleton-rich steep slopes in Muschelkalk, though deep loess soils and Keuper gypsum soils are also used for viticulture.
- The vineyard sites lie at altitudes of 180 to 510 metres above sea level, with a mean annual temperature of between 9.3 °C and 10.5 °C and mean annual rainfall of between 550 and 1,050 millimetres.
- The sites around Lake Constance and along the Upper Neckar receive on average higher annual rainfall than those along the Middle Neckar and in the Kocher-Jagst-Tauber region.
Human factors
- Labour-intensive steep-slope viticulture has an especially long tradition in the Württemberg wine-growing region.
- For grapes destined for Prädikatswein, growers can selectively influence quality and grape composition through canopy-management practices such as leaf removal in the bunch zone or crop thinning.
Product characteristics
- Wine from Württemberg is known for its red-wine sites, with Trollinger and Riesling as the most widely planted varieties; on the steep slopes of the Neckar valley around Stuttgart and the Esslingen area, full-bodied, characterful Trollinger wines are produced. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
